PINEWOOD Judo Club's youngsters overcame illness and experienced opponents to bring home an impressive eight medals from the 2013 British Championships.

The event in Sheffield was the first part of the championships, with the pre-cadets and cadets in action over two days ahead of the tournament for the under 21s and seniors this weekend.

The Saturday was for the boys cadets and the girls pre-cadets, and Christian Tepper fought well to take the gold medal at under 38kgs with some excellent throws.

Holly Eccles won the bronze medal at under 36kgs and then came three silver medals from Kiera Bateman at under 44kgs, Kymran Shergill at under 52kgs and Crissie Webb in the over 63kgs weight group.

Sunday was the turn of the boys pre-cadets and girls cadet groups, with James Widman starting things off with a silver at under 34kgs.

There were a large number of strong fighters in the weight group so this was an impressive result for Widman.

Pinewood coach Don Werner stepped Thomas Huckstep up a grade and his judgement proved to be sound as he fought superbly to win bronze at under 55kgs.

The last medal of the day for Pinewood came from Emma Pang, who despite being ill, produced some superb judo to reach the final.

The talented youngster then called on all her experience to win a tough fight and claim gold with a throw three seconds from the end.
