Bracknell Athletic Club took first place in their opening Southern Athletics League fixture of the season.

They made a 240-mile round trip to last year’s champions, Nene Valley Harriers, and claimed victory by just half a match point.

Bracknell’s male jumping team were outstanding, taking maximum points in all four contests.

Peter Marlow and Ollie Joint won both strings of the high jump – a rare double last achieved in June 2016.

Marlow and Luke Batup beat all before them in the A string triple jump, after Batup had earlier won the junior long jump.

The senior title went to team-mate Robbie Wilde, while a pole vault double was achieved by Charlie Ashdown-Taylor and Nathan Standing.

Bracknell’s best throwing result came in the shot, where Ashdown-Taylor took second place, adding 88cm to his previous best.

On the track, fit-again Jake Hatfield won the 100m in a club-record time in his age group, breaking a record that stood since 2010.

Matt Buckner equalled an even older club record set in 1978 to win the U20 200m senior race in 21.8s.

Aaron Enser came first in the 2,000m steeplechase in a personal best time, finishing 30 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Enser ran with younger brother, Cameron, who placed second in the B string field.

Bracknell youth James Miller clocked a Grade One pb to finish second in the junior 200m, while Batup ran a pb in the senior 110m hurdles to take second.

Adam Dart ran the club’s fastest 5k time since 2014 in his first outing at the distance.

Bracknell’s ladies were also celebrating after a double victory for Abbie and Emily Jones in the 2,000m steeplechase.

There were senior wins for Phoebe Fenwick in the 400m, Hannah Roberts in the 800m and Rachel McClay in the metric mile. B string races were won by Emma Morris (200m) and Laurie Marlow (3,000m).

In the field events, Connie McCafferty won the senior high jump and Isobel Deacon the senior pole vault.

The ladies won both of their relays. The quartet of Matilda Robinson, Emma Morris, Abbie Sillett and Imogene Cook finished 80 seconds clear in the 4x100m.

Hannah Roberts, sisters Hannah and Rachel McClay and Phoebe Fenwick won the 4x400m relay by more than nine seconds from their nearest rivals.

Point scores: Bracknell 207; Nene Valley 206.56; Colchester 190.50; Belgrave 174.
