Bracknell knew a win would see them crowned champions for the second year running, and they duly delivered with another eye-catching performance.

Remarkably, the victory means Bracknell also remained unbeaten in league fixtures for the second season in a row.

From the first whistle they were on the front foot and went ahead early on when scrum-half Paddy Spiers darted over for a try under the posts, which Ben Stevens converted for a 7-0 lead.

Their fast start continued and Bracknell’s front row of Liam Collins, Matt Murphy and Tom Hodge dominated the scrums, allowing the backs to prosper with quick, clean ball.

The hosts soon grabbed a second try and it was Spiers who went over again after the ball had been spun wide.

Abbey had little answer to Bracknell’s superior forwards’ power. Alec Brombley, Jamie Johnson, Ben Cotton and Ben Atkins were winning every ruck, and it was Atkins who showed his strength to drive over the line for his side’s third try.

The fourth try followed when Spiers intercepted a pass and fed wing Jack McGee, who put number eight Thomas Spencer-Jones away in the corner. The conversion was missed but Bracknell had secured the bonus point and a 22-0 lead at the interval.

Such is the depth of talent at Lily Hill that Bracknell brought on fresh legs throughout the second period with Bayley Campbell and Marc van Nieuwenhuizen joining the forward line.

But it was right wing Harry Baker who was next to cross the line when he barged over following a flowing team move, with Stevens adding the extras.

Abbey had struggled for possession all afternoon but, to their credit, they finally put some points on the board with an uncoverted try from their backs.

However, back came Bracknell and their back line of James Barratt, Jake Stone, Richard Mellor and Toby Hullis took control of midfield as full-back James Miles mopped up anything in the deep.

They continued to press forward in the closing stages and two further tries in quick succession from Atkins and Spencer Jones boosted the scoreboard.

Abbey refused to give in and notched a converted second try, this time from their forwards, in the closing stages.

Fittingly, though, the champions had the final word when Atkins dabbed down to complete his own hat-trick of tries and put the gloss on a another memorable season for the Lily Hill youngsters.

Joining in the celebrations were Luke Bull and Izzy Moore Aiono, who were ruled out with injury and illness but played key roles during the season.
