The Sumas went into the contest at Henley Town in the knowledge a point would be enough to claim a first ever league championship, and late goals from Luke Scope and Julian Harley sealed the deal in style.

And the ecstatic joint boss told the News: “I’m delighted for the lads, they’ve worked really hard from day one when we came together in June. We’ve worked our socks off and this was always our goal - we wanted to win the league and get promotion.

“That set of players have made history - no-one else is going to be the first to win a league title.

“I think it’s about 35 years since Wokingham Town won one so it’s nice to have a title trophy back in Wokingham.

“The players have been outstanding, every single one of them.

He continued: “I’ve always said this squad of players is good enough to win this league.

“This was our number one priority and anything less than winning the league would have been a disappointment.

“We’ve got a small squad of 18 players which isn’t a lot for a season of football and we’ve had ups and downs, but whenever we’ve had a knock we’ve got up and dug in.” Sumas had to battle for their victory against Headington on a beautiful, sunny afternoon at the Invesco Perpetual Triangle.

The first half was a tame affair with little goalmouth action, James Charlton coming nearest for Wokingham when his fierce drive was tipped round the post.

The visitors continued to frustrate Bateman and Matt Eggleston’s side after the break, but any nerves among the Wokingham supporters were allayed in the 80th minute.

Nick Bateman picked a perfect through ball, and Scope collected it before firing low across the goalkeeper into the left-hand corner of the net.

That effort was the striker’s 18th league goal of the campaign, putting him level with Penn & Tylers Green’s Chris Hurst in the race for the Golden Boot.

Wokingham & Emmbrook put the game to bed in injury time, as substitute Mark O’Connell produced a fine piece of individual trickery to beat his man before crossing for Harley to head home.

With an impressive Sumas following bursting in to song with chants of “campiones” filling the ground, Headington nearly grabbed a late goal, only for goalkeeper Sean Woodward to make a brilliant save with his foot, turning the ball round the left-hand post.

Reflecting on the game, Bateman said: “It was nice to win and I never felt we were going to lose the game. There weren’t many chances but it’s always hard to get over the line, no matter who you’re playing. It’s always a bit nervy.

“Now we can relax and enjoy the Reading Senior Cup, which we have a good affinity with having won it four times in the last five years.

“But we’ve got a tough semi-final against Marlow United and then potentially Binfield or Henley Town.” And the manager – who was heading down to Cornwall later on Saturday night – is also confident his side can be a force in the Hellenic League Premier Division next season.

He said: “I was meant to be going to Cornwall yesterday but my wife and kid have gone on their own and I’m joining them. I’ve got a five-hour car drive but I’ll have a smile all over my face.

“We’ve got nothing to fear next season. In the last two years in the cup we’ve always fared well against the sides from the league above.

“We narrowly lost to Ascot this year but we’ve beaten Highmoor Ibis and Newbury and last year we beat Thame.” Sumas president Mark Ashwell paid tribute to both the playing and coaching staff, describing the title success as “unbelievable”.

He added: “It’s been a long journey. I’m going to have to let it sink in but it’s emotional.

“Matt is Emmbrook through and through, and Dan is Wokingham through and through so it’s a dream.

“The players are all Wokingham boys and they pay to play and I’m very proud of what they’ve done.” Sumas had previously moved level on top of the table by thrashing Rayners Lane 5-0 last Tuesday.

Adam Cooke opened the scoring with a header before Scope doubled the lead with his 100th for the club, and in an astonishing first half, Nick Bateman and Scope made it 4-0 before the break.

Dan Collier scored arguably the goal of the night – a brilliant 25-yard volley – two minutes into the second half, but that was the last time the Sumas scored in a fabulous victory.

And Wokingham's outstanding form continued last night in a 4-0 victory against Woodley Town at Scours Lane.

After a goalless first half, Sumas bossed the second period and goals from Jake Butler, Luke Scope, James Charlton and sub Craig Haylett delivered three more points.

Sumas complete their league season at Henley Town this Saturday (3pm) when they should receive the league trophy prior to kick off.
