The Sumas saw Nick Bateman sent off for a second yellow card late in the first half, and then fell behind before the break.

But Cooke headed home the equaliser shortly after the break and joint-boss Dan Bateman was left with mixed emotions at the final whistle.

“We had 10 men for more than half the match and were a goal down, so to get a point was a good effort,” he told the News.

“The red card was harsh and I thought for 75 to 80 minutes we controlled large portions of the game, and played good football.

“The referee was trying to get a grip of the game and decided to make an example of Nicky.

“He booked him for a tackle and, then again when one of their players made a meal out of a challenge to get him sent off.

“Then they didn’t get a penalty in the 85th minute that looked nailed on, the referee even put his whistle to his mouth. Maybe he thought that would even it up, but then two wrongs don’t make a right.” Bateman was also pleased with Cooke’s debut, saying: “Adam came in at short notice, he signed on Thursday as we had a bit of a centre back crisis and was excellent.

“He was on the bench for us a few times last season and has been at Windsor, but he’s with us and is a big addition at the back, he strengthens the defence.” Sumas started the match brightly as Mark O’Connell’s cross went narrowly over the bar and Bateman’s shot from the edge of the box went just past the post.

Luke Scope also had an effort saved by Chinnor keeper Ben Taunton as the visitors looked to take control of the match.

But Sumas suffered a double blow late in the half as Bateman, pictured below left, was sent off for a second yellow card, and Dan Stone then gave Chinnor the lead a minute later.

However, the visitors responded well to the setbacks at the start of the second half as Cooke headed home Jack Gibbs’ corner to level the scores.

They then lost Sam Bateman to an ankle injury, but the Sumas still finished the match on the front foot.

Julian Harley, Scope and Josh Pearson all went close for the visitors while Chinnor were aggrieved not to be awarded for a penalty for a foul in the area.

Sumas travel to Letcombe in the third round of the Hellenic Supplementary Cup on Saturday (3pm) before going to Henley Town in the league next Tuesday (7.45pm).
