ASCOT United captain Dave Hancock says the Yellamen are in the best position for years to take all three points in this weekend’s derby at Binfield.

Ascot have proved to be a force to be reckoned with this season after going on a 16-match unbeaten run in the Hellenic Premier, which was only halted last weekend by Wantage Town, where they lost 2-1.

The Moles meanwhile have had an inconsistent season and sit 11th in the table.

Hancock told the News: “It was a great run that we went on. We always believed that we were capable of doing it.

“We’ve now proven to ourselves that we’re a top side in the league, and we hope we can get back on another run.” Speaking ahead of the clash at Hill Farm Lane, he said: “I think everyone is looking forward to Saturday.

“We’ve got a bit of an incentive now to get back on a winning run.

“I think it’s the first time in the Hellenic Premier that Ascot have been above Binfield. We’ve always been the underdogs but we should match them in most areas this time.” He cited the consistent team selection at Ascot as a key part of their success, which he hopes will give them the edge on Saturday.

However, the Yellamen’s excellent run of form finally came to an end at a gusty Wantage last weekend.

Hancock described the first-half wind as, ‘the most difficult passage of football I’ve played in’.

Playing against the ferocious swirl, the hosts took the game to Ascot and eventually broke the deadlock on 38 minutes when Tom Butler’s speculative effort found the bottom corner.

However, Ascot equalised within 60 seconds as Rob Saunders’ free kick was bundled home by Joe Yeates to make it all square at the break.

A five minute spell midway through the second period turned the game, as Ascot had two headers cleared off the line and then had the best chance of all when Leon Yarnie was sent clear but inexplicably dragged his shot wide of the post.

And it was only two minutes later that Wantage won a free kick at the other end and Richard Clayton headed in the eventual winner.

“After the game there was a lot of frustration,” admitted Hancock.

The Yellamen welcome back Jermaine Roache for Saturday’s clash (3pm ko), but Lee Boon is sidelined with an ankle injury.

ASCOT United Ladies recovered from a two-goal deficit to beat Fleetlands Ladies 6-3 in the Southern Region Women’s Football League.

The Yellawomen trailed 2-0 after half an hour, but full back Kate Brown scored her first goal for Ascot seven minutes before the break to set them on their way.

However, Ascot made life difficult for themselves by conceding a penalty to go 3-1 down.

This seemed to galvanise the side though, and they scored five more times thanks to braces from Hannah Evans and Alice Hyde, and one from Stephanie Fettes. It was Ascot’s last game before the Christmas break and they resume in January.
