JAKE Butler scored twice as Wokingham & Emmbrook came from behind to beat rivals Finchampstead 4-1 at Lowther Road.

The result moves Sumas up to seventh in Hellenic Division One East and stretches their unbeaten league run to six matches.

Finch, on the other hand, remain second from bottom with just three league wins to their name.

“We were delighted with the result,” said Wokingham joint manager Matt Eggleston.

“It’s the first time we have beaten them comprehensively in a while and we could have had more.

“Their keeper made some excellent saves and we started to tear them apart in the second half.” Eggleston also paid tribute to Butler, who picked up an injury in pre-season but now has 11 goals in 14 games.

“We are delighted with his attitude and performances and long may they continue,” he said.

“But we also have to give credit to Nick Bateman and Billy Elgar as they are doing a great job in midfield.” Finch started brightly enough at Lowther Road last Saturday and came close to taking the lead in the first minute when Kylo Atkinson broke free of the defence and fired just wide.

Nick Bateman had a shot well held by Finch goalkeeper Neil Griffiths at the other end but it was the visitors who went ahead on 12 minutes.

Atkinson’s 25-yard free-kick hit the woodwork and Richard Kell was on hand to slot home the rebound.

Both teams continued to create chances, with Elliott Rushforth, Bateman and Butler all going close for Sumas and Ashley Withers saving well from Atkinson.

But Sumas grew stronger as the half wore on and they levelled before the break when James Charlton headed home a free-kick from Jack Gibbs.

Withers preserved parity with a couple of vital stops early in the second period while Griffiths also saved well from Butler.

It was Sumas, though, who got the breakthrough on 53 minutes when Mark O’Connell surged down the right wing and crossed for George Dance to head in.

The lead was doubled shortly afterwards as Billy Elgar’s powerful strike was deflected out by Griffiths and Butler finished from close range.

Buoyed by the quickfire double, Sumas took firm control of the match and rarely looked like relinquishing their lead.

In fact, they extended it further with seven minutes remaining when Griffiths fouled Dance in the box and Butler converted the penalty.

Finch won’t have to wait long for a shot at revenge as the two teams meet again on Boxing Day.

Before then, Sumas host Rayners Lane on Saturday (2pm ko) while Finch are not in action.
