GOING two goals down in the first half and scoring five themselves in the second suggests Binfield only turned it on for 45 minutes in their 5-3 win at Longlevens on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

But that was a long way from the truth, as the Moles virtually created just as many chances in the opening period as they did in the second.

They were, however, denied by three goal-line clearances and the post, while several shots flew just wide or over the target.

Binfield were also wasteful in front of goal and so went in at half-time trailing 2-0, with both goals coming from set pieces.

The visitors nearly conceded a third early in the second half, and manager Roger Herridge decided that fresh legs were needed.

In quick succession, he replaced Jake White and the injured Sean Moore with Grant Kemp and Matt Jones.

“The subs certainly made a difference when they came on,” said Herridge.

With almost his first touch, Jones ran on to Ferdinand’s pass and, when his shot was parried, Ferdinand was on hand to shoot home.

The Moles poured forward and it was soon 2-2 when Alex Luis crossed into the six-yard area for Lewis Leonetti to volley home from six yards.

The Gloucestershire side regained the lead, but not for long with Leonetti meeting Ferdinand’s cross with a powerful header.

Within two minutes Ferdinand put his side ahead for the first time with a shot from 20 yards that found the bottom corner.

With conditions worsening following continuous rain, both sides had chances as the match entered the final 15 minutes.

Jones was thwarted by a great tackle with an empty net beckoning, while at the other end keeper Mo Nyamunga twice had to save at his near post.

Binfield finally made the points safe when Ferdinand and Jones again combined with the former completing his hat-trick and taking his season’s tally to 23.

Moles host Highworth Town this Saturday (3pm ko).
