FIVE different scorers were on target as Royal Wootton Bassett Town made light work of Sandhurst Town with a 5-1 victory in their Hellenic League Floodlit Cup second round clash, writes Richard Ashton.

The hosts built a 2-0 lead early on, with Dale Richards slotting home the opener into an open goal after Henry Spalding had raced onto Steve Robertson’s through ball and unselfishly squared to his fellow in-form winger.

Alioune Diouf then dispatched a towering header as he connected with an inswinging Spalding corner.

Sandhurst were able to halve the deficit just after the half hour mark though. Sloppy defending saw the visitors steal possession from a throw-in Bassett had deep in their own half, and Maurice Black capitalised, dancing past a stranded George Drewitt before finishing neatly.

However, Bassett quickly restored their two-goal advantage as Adam Corcoran swept in from close range after Robertson’s far post knock down of another Spalding set piece.

The second period started with the home side conceding a penalty. However, Curtis Meare – who produced a handful of quality saves during the match – guessed correctly and was able to repel the effort.

Bassett then turned the screw even further.

Robertson was again provider for the fourth, collecting a short free kick from Sam Packer and advancing into the box. It did appear he was going for goal himself with a right-footed effort from a tight angle. Nevertheless, defender Liam Edmondson made sure the ball found the back of the net with a header.

The hosts arguably saved their best goal until last.

Catching Sandhurst out with a short corner, Robertson set a pass back to Packer, who shifted the ball onto his right foot before curling a delicious strike into the far top corner from the wing.
