WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook put in a fine display to secure a 1-1 draw at Hellenic League Division One East high-flyers Bicester Town, writes Richard Ashton.
Elliott Rushforth had a couple of early chances for Satsumas, being denied once by the goalkeeper before skewing a cross-cum-shot wide.
The visitors were made to rue those missed opportunities midway through the first half as a cross was not dealt with, allowing Kieran Scott to put Bicester 1-0 in front.
A Ben Findlay volley forced a decent save as Wokingham continued to take the game to their second-placed opponents, and Tom Skidmore was the next to try his luck when failing to hit the target.
Substitute Ben Broadhurst – who replaced injured captain Will Day – worked the Bicester goalkeeper again before the break while at the other end the hosts had a penalty appeal turned down.
But Wokingham did manage to equalise early in the second half when Findlay converted a fine Rusworth cross.
Chances were few and far between as the game wore on, although Sean Woodward was required to make a fine save for the visitors.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men when Sumas’ Sam Lawrence and Town’s Gavin Kidd were both dismissed following an altercation.
Jake Lawrence had a late chance for the visitors but was unable to finish, while centre back James Charlton – who began the season at Binfield – impressed on his return to Wokingham and they held out for an impressive draw.
Wokingham & Emmbrook visit table-topping Penn & Tylers Green on Saturday (2.15pm).
