ASCOT United produced a performance of character to win 3-2 at Highworth Town in their Hellenic League Premier Division encounter on Wednesday.

The Yellamen led early on – were behind at half time – before fighting back to win with ten men after seeing their goalkeeper dismissed for the second time in four games.

Just five minutes in, Charlie Samuels struck the bar for Ascot before Luke Wilson fired into the top left hand corner to give the Yellamen an eighth-minute lead.

It was a confident start from the Yellamen – although after twice being caught on the break – the visitors were sweating when ‘keeper Aaron Watkins required treatment for a head injury.

After a lengthy stoppage, the Worthians hit the post before equalising in the 28th minute.

The Yellamen then forged another couple of chances before half time, but Theo Jones conceded a penalty, which the hosts converted to give them a 2-1 lead at the break.

The second half began with Ascot chasing the game, and it was Luke Wilson who netted again with a superb 25-yard effort to restore parity after 51 minutes.

However, the drama would follow.

After a double-substitution, the Yellamen were left to re-organise again when stand-in ‘keeper Watkins – a replacement for already-suspended Carl Dennison – was dismissed for handling outside the area.

Cue Jeff Lamb for the remaining 18 minutes – taking over in goal once again – and his side would pull off the most remarkable result.

With 82 minutes played, Ben Knight forced a fine save and corner, and in the resultant passage of play, James Brazier turned home to give Ascot a dramatic 3-2 lead.

As time ebbed away, both sides had further chances; Steven Deverall the last-ditch hero for Ascot with a goal-line clearance – but the Yellamen held on for three fabulous points that had looked highly unlikely twenty minutes earlier.
