FINCHAMPSTEAD ended their nine-match winless run with a comprehensive 3-0 success at lowly Wantage Town Reserves on Saturday, writes Richard Ashton.

Finch goalkeeper Tom Bryant was called into action early in this Hellenic League Division One East encounter, denying Dan Timbrell.

Jared Jones then put in a wicked cross which flashed across the Finch goalmouth, but the visitors went in front on 16 minutes, a long ball bouncing kindly for Nathan Onreat-Wells to nod it over Wantage keeper Harry Whitehead and into the net.

Finch then extended their lead in the 35th minute, Luke Axton-Hall heading home.

Callum Driscoll had an opportunity to halve the deficit shortly after and Finch went into the break with a two-goal advantage.

The second half was also an open affair and Axton-Hall was only denied his second by a fine Whitehead save.

At the other end, Ben Winship cleared a goalbound shot off the line before Onreat-Wells was again denied.

Wantage continued to create chances and Gary Callaway had to clear another effort off the line, but substitute Dan Blatchford then forced a fine save by Whitehead with a 40-yard piledriver.

Finch sealed the victory in injury time after Gavin Rolls was felled in the penalty area. Blatchford made no mistake from the spot to make it 3-0 and Finch held on comfortably.

Finchampstead had previously been beaten 4-0 at table-topping Penn & Tylers Green on Tuesday of last week.

Danny Jordan bagged a brace and George Weller and replacement Lee Thompson completed the scoring in a comfortable win for the league leaders.
Those results leave Finch eighth in the table, and they will have the opportunity for revenge against Penn & Tylers Green this coming Saturday (3pm).

They then complete their league campaign against Chalfont Wasps – in a game to be played at Amersham FC – next Tuesday (7.30pm).

EVERSLEY & California kept their Combined Counties League Division One promotion dreams alive with a 2-0 home win against Banstead Athletic on Saturday, Matt Griffiths and Brad Smith getting the goals.

The fourth-placed Boars were due to visit Dorking Wanderers Reserves last night, before visiting Epsom Athletic on Saturday (3pm).

SANDHURST Town drew 2-2 at Ash United in their Combined Counties League Division One clash on Saturday.

The Fizzers visit Epsom Athletic tonight (7.45pm) before hosting Farleigh Rovers on Saturday (3pm).
