BINFIELD FC recorded their best Hellenic League Premier Division home win of the season with a fine 4-0 success against fourth-placed rivals Ascot United on Thursday night.

Toby Nowell made his first starting appearance after a February Binfield debut from the bench and the midfielder was to star, hitting the vital first goal and adding the Moles’ fourth after Michael Walton had scored the other two.

However, perhaps most important for the Moles was recording a first clean sheet since November, after conceding two goals in their previous 11 consecutive league outings.

Both sides started well and United had the first chance, Ed Smith shooting narrowly past Nathan Silver’s left-hand post.

Binfield had chances too and forced a couple of early corners, well collected by Chris Grace, before Nowell latched onto Josh Howell’s through ball to get one on one and calmly finished to the keeper’s left.

Nowell and Grace continued a good battle, with the Ascot keeper saving his header on 29 minutes, before the Moles midfielder was denied his and Binfield’s second by an offside flag. It remained 1-0 until the break.

After an even start to the second half, the Moles secured the win in a hot five-minute spell just past the hour mark. Michael Walton added his third and fourth goals of the season, first heading in at the back past from an Alex Luis cross on 62 minutes, before he repeated the feat two minutes later, heading in Josh Howell’s corner.

Just another two minutes on and Nowell was again through to face Grace, and he rounded the keeper to make it 4-0 to a jubilant Binfield.

Grace then tipped over Danny Horscroft’s effort to prevent a fifth, before his opposite number Silver exited due to injury.

Brooks struck the bar for Ascot before Smith stabbed Hedges’ cross wide as United went looking for a consolation.

However, the home side were soon back on the attack and Grace once again prevented a fifth when he tipped Brown’s header over after the Yellamen had lost possession too easily.

Ascot United – who will play Brimscombe & Thrupp in the final of the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup following their 4-2 win at Thatcham Town – host Brackley Town Saints on Saturday (3pm), before welcoming Binfield to The Racecourse Ground on Monday night (7.45pm).
