WOKINGHAM & Emmbrook again enjoyed some respite from their difficult league campaign as they cruised to a 5-0 win at home to Stokenchurch in the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Challenge Cup, writes Richard Ashton.
The early stages at The Triangle proved an even affair as the visitors – languishing at the wrong end of Hellenic League Division Two East – more than matched their Premier Division opponents.
Wokingham did have an opportunity to take the lead when Josh Pearson went close, although they then had a scare at the other end.
However, Dan Bateman and Matt Eggleston’s side immediately went to the other end of the pitch and went in front courtesy of a Jake Butler penalty, awarded after he was brought down.
The goalscorer had a chance to double his side’s advantage shortly after, but he headed wide when well placed.
Butler (pictured below) did make it 2-0 midway through the second half when he converted a fine Jordan Rowland cross, and Sumas put the game to bed when Blake Stewart added a quick-fire brace – the first a superb strike from 20 yards.
And they wrapped up a convincing win when James Charlton converted a Pearson cross in the closing stages.
Wokingham & Emmbrook had previously been beaten 2-0 at home by Highmoor Ibis in the Hellenic League Premier Division on Tuesday of last week.
Eggleston was left furious after Butler had a 20th-minute goal ruled out for offside, and a Mitchell Parker double earned three points for the away side.
That defeat left Sumas with nine points from their 30 games this season, ahead of a trip to Thame United last night.
Wokingham & Emmbrook then host Tuffley Rovers on Saturday (3pm) before travelling to Highworth Town on Monday (3pm).
FINCHAMPSTEAD earned a 0-0 draw at Chinnor in their Hellenic League Division One East tussle on Tuesday of last week.
The result leaves Jon Laugharne’s side seventh in the table ahead of a home game with Headington Amateurs on Saturday (3pm) and a trip to Chalfont Wasps on Monday (3pm).
EVERSLEY & California’s Combined Counties League Division One game at Dorking Wanderers Reserves was postponed.
The Boars, who are fifth in the table, travel to second-bottom South Park Reserves on Saturday before a crucial game against fellow high-flyers Worcester Park on Monday (3pm).
SANDHURST Town return to Combined Counties League Division One action at home to Cobham this Saturday (3pm).
