Turner elected to bat in the hopes of securing 25 points, but his side lost Stuart Parsons (15) and Anthony Clapham (9) cheaply on what was a green-looking track.

However, they fought back well in the middle order with Turner (pictured left) top-scoring (83), and Jack Fisher (42), Stuart Hayter (42 from 36 balls) and Jono Fowler (24*) all contributing before Wokingham declared on an imposing 240-5 in 50 overs.

The Oaks claimed two early wickets to leave the hosts wobbling on 43-2, but former Glamorgan and Sussex man Keith Newell (59) steadied the ship alongside Robbie Jones (33).

And although they both fell to leave Wycombe on 153-4, the experienced Paul Sawyer (54*) and Alan Duncan (37*) guided their side home on a wicket which became flatter as the afternoon progressed.

And Fowler confessed: “The league’s gone for definite now but in truth, we haven’t been quite good enough to deserve it this year.

“Saturday was a prime example of how we haven’t been ruthless enough in making the most of good opportunities. We set a great platform with our batting but our bowling lacked a cutting edge.

“We needed a little bit of craft and guile to get wickets on that pitch and we didn’t have it. Full credit must go to High Wycombe, though. They battled hard and are fighting to stay in the league.” However, Turner is now targetting a third place finish and paid tribute to his side.

He said: “I couldn’t fault the effort of the boys but overall I feel we have just lacked consistency in all three elements of the game.

“We have a chance to make third place against Kidmore End at home on Saturday. I think that will be a fair reflection of how we’ve played this year.” Wokingham 2nds dropped to fourth in Division 3a after an abject batting display consigned them to a 69-run reverse at home to Royal Ascot.

The Oaks appeared to be in control after an impressive bowling effort saw the visitors rolled over for just 146, but a superb display from Ascot paceman Will Ellison (5-17) skittled Wokingham for just 77 in reply.

The Oaks could play an important role in a final day relegation scrap as they travel to second-bottom Henley 3rds on Saturday.

In Division 5a, mid-table Wokingham 3rds fell agonisingly short of claiming victory against Harefield 3rds.

Ollie Miles proved the rock for The Oaks as he made an excellent 75 in their total of 210 in 51 overs.

And his side produced an excellent effort with the ball to restrict the hosts to 193-9 in their run chase.

The Oaks conclude their season at home to Princes Risborough on Saturday.

Wokingham 4ths were also involved in a thrilling draw with Windsor 4ths in Division 8a.

The hosts were bowled out for 180 when they batted first, but kept their opponents in check throughout the innings and Windsor closed on 170-8.

Wokingham 4ths end their campaign with a clash at Reading 4ths this weekend.

Second bottom Wokingham 5ths rounded off a miserable day for the club as their batting also let them down in a 53-run loss against Yateley 4ths in Division 9a.

Things looked promising for The Oaks when Andy Bishop (5-56) and Mohammed Ghafoor (4-51) tore through the visitors batting line-up, knocking them over for just 135.

But Wokingham struggled in their reply as only Roger Heath (25) and Steve Levett (16) reached double figures in their total of just 82 all out.

Opening bowler Anthony McGowan proved the chief destroyer with impressive figures of 5-35.

The Oaks travel to NPL Teddington 3rds to round off their season on Saturday.
