SKIPPER Carl Davies led from the front as Bracknell Town further eased away from the Hellenic League Premier Division relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Highmoor Ibis, writes Dave Wright.

With recent signing Lee Rushe partnering Callum Whitty at the heart of the defence, Davies returned to his old role of centre forward for the game at Palmer Park on Saturday.

He made an immediate impact and proved troublesome for the Highmoor defence all afternoon.

With just five minutes gone Adam Cornell was brought down in the area by Jerome Coultress and Davies made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending keeper Ashley East the wrong way.

Three minutes later, Davies took possession on the right side of the area and Cornell was on hand at the far post to turn the ball home from close range.

“It was great to get off to a start like that,” said manager Mark Tallentire.

“Those early goals helped us to settle down as it wasn’t easy out there with the wind and bumpy pitch not helping.

“The defender who gave away the penalty looked to be the last man, so he was lucky not to be have been shown the red card.”

Tallentire continued: “We were definitely the better side and could have scored one or two more goals.”

Davies had a chance to net again when Cornell picked up a poor clearance from East, but the skipper headed over the bar.

Highmoor edged their way more into the game and pulled a goal back through their captain, Harrison Bayley, on 55 minutes.

But, apart from one chance, Bracknell always looked capable of hanging on to their lead, and extending their unbeaten run to seven games.

“We came here to do a job, which we did,” added Tallentire.

“They defended well and the goal we gave away looked to be down to a keeper error, but I was always confident we would win.”

With home games against Brimscombe & Thrupp on Saturday and Royal Wootton Bassett on Monday (both 3pm), the Robins will be looking for six more points as they seek to climb the table.
