BRACKNELL Town manager Mark Tallentire was left bitterly disappointed after seeing Ascot United perform a “smash and grab” raid on Sunday, writes Dave Wright.

The Yellamen triumphed 1-0 but the Robins dominated large parts of the east Berkshire derby which attracted a crowd of just under 300, by far the biggest attendance at Larges Lane this season.

And the hosts also claim they had a late goal wrongly disallowed.

Tallentire emerged from the dressing room to say: “There is a very disappointed group of lads in there.

“They are all gutted not to have got something out of the game. We deserved at least a share of the spoils as I thought we were terrific.”

“We played great football. Some of our play in the first half hour on that surface was out of the world.

“So I feel sad for the players because they put in a hell of a shift, but got nothing out of the game, and that has left us all disappointed.”

Tallentire added: “I thought we were better than them in all departments. Defensively we were good and so was our front three, although if there is one thing we can improve on then it is that final ball.

“We got into some great positions but that one little ball that opens up defences up just wasn’t quite there, but we definitely had some chances.”

Bracknell players thought they had grabbed a late equaliser when Johnnie Dyer headed in a right-wing cross from Callum Whitty.

“The linesman said Callum’s pull back had gone out of play, but players felt it hadn’t, not the whole ball.

“Even some of their players were not certain it went out,” said Tallentire.

“The least we deserved was a draw and to get nothing out of the game has left us all very disappointed, but our season won’t be defined playing against one of the top four sides.

“If we do manage to get points then it is a bonus, and I felt we should have had one today.

“But we are going in the right direction. We have some good footballers here and we will keep doing the right things. If we keep up the level of performance week in, week out, then we will win more games than we will lose.”

Bracknell now find themselves back in the bottom two of the table following Abingdon United’s 5-1 win at Milton on Monday.

And they face a particularly hard task this Saturday as they travel to meet high-flying Highworth, who kept up their title ambitions by hammering Royal Wootton Bassett 8-0 on Monday.

“They are a quality side and we know we are in for a tough game,” added Tallentire.

“But we will go there full of confidence and try to bring home a point or three.”
