BRACKNELL Town manager Mark Tallentire said he and his team were “really chuffed” after beating Abingdon United 3-1 at Larges Lane on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

The Robins leapfrogged their fellow strugglers and are now third from bottom of the Hellenic League’s Premier Division.

“We’re buzzing, we are over the moon,” said Tallentire. “When I came here, half my goal was to get the club out of the bottom two before Christmas; so we have achieved that.

“I’m really, really chuffed for the players as they all put a fantastic shift. We deserve to be out of the bottom two because we have played some good stuff in the last two or three weeks.”

But Tallentire admits that his new-look side still have a lot to do if they are to pull clear of the relegation zone in the second half of the season.

After seeing his men complete the double over Abingdon, Tallentire added: “We have all spoken about little goals, but we are not looking too far ahead of ourselves.

“We are looking at things on a two or three weekly basis to see what we can do. We are looking at those group of teams who are just above us and try to catch them as quickly as we can.

“We have got some tough games coming up, starting with Ascot on Sunday (at Larges Lane, 1pm) and then Highworth (January 2).”

Tallentire is rebuilding his side with experienced players, with his latest acquisition being Steve Nebbett, who was previously the club’s joint manager with current player Danny Oliphant.

“He will also be my assistant manager,” the Robins boss told the News. “Nebs has passion and enthusiasm for this club. His input will be vital over the coming months.

“Steve and Danny are a big part of Bracknell’s recent history. For someone of his age and legs, I thought’s Danny’s performance was fantastic, particularly in the first half.”

Robins, who have now taken seven points from their last three games, went 3-0 up in the opening 45 minutes through goals by Adam Cornell, Dan Money and Dan Wing (penalty).

They would have won a lot more comfortably but for some outstanding saves from Abingdon’s 17-year-old ‘keeper Jack Griffiths.

“He made two absolutely unbelievable saves from [James] Suarez,” said Tallentire. “Ok, he should have done better for our second goal, but the boy still deserves 10 out of 10.”

The manager continued: “Our first-half performance was outstanding and we should really have got another couple of goals as we were that dominant.

“But they [Abingdon] changed things around at half time and made it that little bit more difficult for us.

“They had little spell of pressure, but we stayed composed and defended well. Apart from the one goal they did get, we managed the game really well in the second half.

“We have a good squad of players now, but we need to win as many of our remaining games as we can.

“Our season won’t be determined in our games against the sides in the top three or four, but when we play teams around us and if we can pick up a few points against the mid-table teams we should be okay.”
