Davidson Mendes Borges scored on his debut as Bracknell Town defeated Chinnor 1-0 in the Hellenic League's Bluefin Sports Cup.

The Portuguese, who has been waiting patiently for his international clearance to come through, struck the winning goal in the second half of Saturday's first-round tie at Larges Lane.

The Robins, having made a number of changes from the team that drew 1-1 with Kidlington last Tuesday, were soon on the attack with Shane Cooper-Clark firing a free-kick over the bar.

But they quickly discovered they were not in for an easy afternoon against their Division One East visitors.

Keeper Garry Aulsberry twice came to the rescue, while seeing another effort cleared off the line.

Cooper-Clark and Mendes Borges did not take long to strike up an understanding and the pair set up a chance for Kennie Chamberlain, whose effort was tipped over the bar by keeper Ben Taunton.

Robins went close to scoring just before half-time with the dangerous Cooper-Clark seeing his shot cleared off the line and then volleying Elliot Garrington's cross onto the right-hand post.

Bracknell's leading scorer continued to post problems for Chinnor at the start of the second half, with his next attempt curling just wide of the post.

But the Robins had two close escapes in quick succession with Ryan Chapman sending a free header over the bar and then Ben Knola shooting wide of an open goal.

The Oxfordshire side were made to pay for those misses when Bracknell broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when the unmarked Mendes Borges turned in Cooper-Clark's cross from close range.

Mike Lokwa, who had been involved in the build up to the goal, went close to doubling his side's advantage.

Chinnor finished with 10 men as Ryan Chapman was sent off for remarks made to the referee.

Bracknell return to league action tonight (Wednesday) with a tough trip to second-placed Oxford City Nomads.

Then on Saturday they visit Sydenhams Wessex League Division One side Alton Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase.
