BRACKNELL Bees are investigating a possible case of racist abuse during their English Premier Ice Hockey League clash against Sheffield Steeldogs at The Hive on Sunday night.

Bees confirmed a probe has been launched after one of their own fans is alleged to have thrown an item in the direction on the players.

The club also says it is looking into a claim suggesting "verbal abuse with racist connotations" was heard during the match.

The news casts a dark cloud over what should have been a memorable night for Bees, who thrashed Steeldogs 8-1.

Bees general manager Stuart Robinson and managing director Katie Eleftheriou today issued a joint statement on the club's website, saying: "We would like to remind all spectators who visit the Hive that we will not tolerate any offensive behaviour.

"At last night's match against the Sheffield Steeldogs, allegations were made that a Bracknell fan threw an item in the direction of players and that verbal abuse with racist connotations was heard.

"These matters are now being investigated by rink management and any identified offenders will be dealt with severely."

Bees are now looking for help from supporters to identify the culprit on Sunday night.

"Please remember that although passions may run high on the ice, we expect our supporters not to tarnish the excellent name of the club or bring the sport into disrepute," the statement added.

"We would like to thank the fans and players from both teams for the way in which they professionally and respectfully acknowledged each other at the end of this tough battle."
