A SPEEDWAY extravaganza is coming to the area this Sunday.

Members of 'Friends of Speedway' are organising the sixth California Speedway Reunion, in honour of the popular California Poppies speedway team from the 1950.

Two former California Champions - Eric Hockaday and Jimmy Gleed - will be attending and another former ex-Poppies rider, who also took part in the final meeting way back in August 1957, hopes to be there.

Bikes will be started at various times during the family event, and there will be an impressive display of some of the finest , vintage machines from the past.

There will be a guided walk where enthusiasts can see the original children's paddling pool from the holiday camp days which has been cleared by Friends of Speedway members.

There will also be an opportunity to stand on the concrete start/finish line with marked out starting boxes - the only surviving one of its kind.

California Country Park also offers a wealth of historic interest in itself, plus a cafeteria with toilets including one for the disabled.

The speedway display will be open from 11am until 4pm. Entry is free.

'Friends of Speedway' would like to hear from anyone who owns memorabilia of the California Poppies or the sport in general.
