New proposals for the redevelopment of Elms Field include increasing the size of the existing field, creating a new supermarket, boutique cinema and hotel, in addition to around 88 homes.

The revamped site will include the re-routing of Elms Road, which will now run up the west edge of the field connecting to the multi-storey car park and possibly through Shute End to Reading Road.

Philip Mirfin, executive member for regeneration and communities, said: “Over the past year we’ve been listening to what local residents have told us, so have refined our plans taking on board many comments.

“We are looking to create vibrant spaces and improved facilities, which is why we are now consulting on our proposals for Elms Field. Town centres must provide the facilities that residents, now and in the future, need and want. I’m looking forward to discussing our plans with people in more detail.” He said that the field would be around 300ft larger than the current field, and would continue to provide a green lung in the heart of the town.

A new hotel will mark the south-eastern corner of the site with an open plan car park next to it. A boutique cinema will sit alongside a supermarket with 14,000 sq ft of retail space as well as other domestic and retail properties.

The multi-storey car park will remain as will 70 spaces from the Paddocks car park.

The consultation is not on the principal of developing Elms Field but to refine the development prior to a planning application being submitted.

The regeneration of Wokingham took a large step towards completion when the planning application for Peach Place was approved by the borough planning committee on Wednesday, March 4.

Plans include nearly 8,000 ft of retail space, new flats and a removal of the Rose Street car park.
