For the first time the new road will allow users to travel from the southern end, by the level crossing, towards Reading Road. The northern section of the road and the Reading Road junction, was opened last autumn.
John Kaiser, executive member for planning and highways, said: “This is it. We are at the pivotal phase of this project with the opening of the new link road. Not only that, but we are ahead of schedule.
“For the first time, motorists will be able to travel up Barkham Road, turn left into the new road, and continue up to Reading Road.” Once the road is opened periphery work around the link road will go-ahead as the final stage of the project. Closures of nearby roads and traffic reconfiguration during the next 12 weeks will cause travel delays.
With the link road fully open both station car parks will be accessible from both Reading Road and Barkham Road.
The ultimate aim of the station link road is to create a 21st Century travel centre, ease congestion and make access in and around the station safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
The drop-off area outside the station building will be open and the taxi rank fully operational. A new pedestrian crossing will help access to the station from the north car park.
