LOLLIPOP ladies could soon be a thing of the past if plans are approved.

Wokingham Borough Council announced on Wednesday, February 2 proposals to ditch the loved service are currently being discussed affecting eight schools in the borough.

The authority say the reason behind the cut is down to the fact the sites earmarked are located where pedestrian crossings already exist, give children and others a safe point to cross.

“Local authorities nationally are facing difficult decisions and we are one of the last councils in the country to look at its school crossing patrol service,” said Cllr Malcolm Richards.

“Ensuring children can get to school safely is of fundamental importance to us, but these eight sites already have pedestrian crossings giving a safe point to cross.”

The executive member for highways and transport added a further seven sites could also be under review.

Parents and guardians are being invited to comment and, if given the green light could see lollipop ladies no longer needed at the eight schools by the end of the academic year.

The affected sites are Emmbrook Infant and Junior School, Highwood Primary School, Coombes Primary School, St Peters Primary School, Whiteknights Primary School, Beechwood Primary, Hawthorns Primary School and Sonning Primary School.

Consultion on the proposed changes finish on Wednesday, April 19.
