THE supermarket chain chosen to open at Elms Field in Wokingham was accidently revealed last night.

Previously kept under-wraps, recently uncovered maps of the site confirmed discount-chain Aldi have agreed to move into the town centre.

The name was 'outed' in the public design access statements for the soon-to-be regenerated town centre where it states there will be 88 spaces in the new 'Aldi car park'.

Pre-let agreements for a new supermarket and cinema at Elms Field were signed in October 2015 with Cllr Phillip Mirfin, Wokingham Borough's executive member for regeneration, saying at the time the council were choosing between two supermarket offers.

Bracknell News:

A new planning application for the site was submitted by Wokingham Borough Council in November 2015 after a number of concerns were raised by residents about the development.

Philip Mirfin, executive member for regeneration on the council, said: "This wasn't a secret. A lot of people already knew.

"We hadn't widely publicised it because we are still in negotiations but once these are completed we will be able to give full details.

"It's also important to note the food store in the planning application is generic and would suit many retailers."

The proposed scheme includes shops, a boutique cinema, a hotel, new homes and a new park and play area.

It also includes proposals to include parking, move the existing Elms Road to the edge of the park and create a new route linking Wellington Road and Shute End.
