As well as redesigned leisure facilities the proposal includes a 529-space, nine-level multi-storey car park.

The car park, which will be built next to and above a new bowling alley at the south of the site, will be 16m tall.

The scheme includes an extension of the existing leisure centre, refurbishment of the swimming pool, space for other leisure and commercial uses, a new pedestrianised space and 49 residential apartments with separate parking spaces.

Bernie Pich, head of town centre regeneration at Wokingham Borough Council, said: “The proposals for the leisure redevelopment are all about improving the variety and quality of facilities available in the town centre.

“Wokingham is one of the best places to live in the country and it’s important we can help the town live up to its reputation and support a fantastic quality of life for our local residents.

“The new leisure facilities would be a great asset for the town.

“We will be looking to provide a multi-court sports hall, which could also be turned into a performance venue, studio and community spaces, a bigger gym and brand new changing facilities.

“We look forward to sharing details with local people next year as we move into the next stage of the project.” To make way for the new development, Wokingham’s Air Cadet squadron will be forced to move from its current home on Wellington Road.

The council has offered them a new home.

It is intended to incorporate the space from the cadets’ former home into the new development’s 15,000 sq ft of floor space.

The hybrid planning application, submitted on Thursday, April 30, includes detailed plans for the first stages of development, including the car park and the bowling alley and an outline of the second phases of development.

The detailed section of the plans were drawn up in response to the public consultation.

Plans are available online under application O/2015/1056 or in hard copy at the Planning Desk in the civic offices.

Responses to the plans must be submitted by Friday, June 19.

Subject to planning permission being granted, work on the car park is expected to being in Spring next year.
