Tanya Matheson, 35, is one of 10 volunteers who are trying to raise £10,000 for Angels. The money would help 1,000 children off the street and give them an 'Angels kit bag’ containing clothes, toiletries and essential educational equipment.

Recently a team of 12 volunteers for Angels visited the Tiger Kloof School in Vryburg where an affiliated charity, The Hem of His Garment, helps street children.

Tanya said most of the children are aged between five and 10.

She said: “There was a six-year-old boy who had both his siblings with him — one was less than a year old — and his parents had both died. He refused food until he had seen that his siblings had been fed. Over a few days he eventually managed to trust the staff enough to hold the baby whilst he played with the other children.

“Every little bit really helps. Just five pounds is enough to feed 50 children for a week. Currently we pay for 200 children to eat three times a week but for every 200 that we do help there are 200 more that we can’t.” Tanya has signed up to the Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest 10km obstacle course at Wembley Stadium in November. Obstacles include an eight foot wall, a mud bath, monkey bars and giant skips you have to jump in and climb out of.

Despite this gruelling task Tanya says that she is not a natural runner.

“It’s something that I hadn’t anticipated at the beginning of the year. I have never been a good runner but I’m working on it. I can do about three and a half kilometres at the moment but, because of the obstacles, I won’t be doing it flat out,” she said.
