Lia Butterworth, 13, who goes to Edgbarrow School, lives with her mum Lenka, dad Simon, sister Ella, nine, and brother Samuel, three. So far, she has raised £930 for the Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs for children who lose their hair because of cancer treatment. Each wig costs £350.

Lia’s hair used to be more than a foot long but it was cut into a short bob at a salon run by Fiona Povey in Duke’s Ride, Crowthorne, on November 4. Her hair was also donated to the charity.

Lia said: “It was exciting and slightly scary. My friends think I look really nice but they didn’t recognise me at first.

“Two months ago we were discussing cutting my hair and my mum suggested donating it to charity. After some searching, we found Little Princess Trust which gives the hair to children rather than adults who may be able to cope with hair loss better.

“I definitely notice the cold more now. I have to wear a scarf which is unusual for me.” Mrs Butterworth said: “It was over very quickly. Neither of us cried, which I’m very proud of. She was very pleased. When she was asked how much she wanted to have off she said: 'as much as possible.’ Hopefully we can make some little girl very happy.

“I have been approached by some friends asking if I would do the same. I might grow my hair a bit longer and then do it myself.” To support Lia, visit www.justgiving.com/LiaB
