WOKINGHAM was treated to a touch of glamour as models hit the catwalk for a fashion show.

A total of 100 people saw some fabulous outfits in the town hall, in the event organised by Wokingham Town Team on Thursday, May 23.

Georgina Hustler, owner of Antique Rose shop in Bush Walk and a member of the town team, said: "I could not believe how the room was transformed.

"The atmosphere created by the lights and music as well as the buzz as everyone waited for the show to begin, was electric. It could have been London Fashion Week. The aim of the show was to demonstrate that you can really create a fantastic look if you shop around."

The show was opened by new Wokingham Town Mayor Cllr Martin Bishop, and fronted by stylist Emma Tennant, who talked about the outfits and gave styling and wardrobe advice to the excited audience - who enjoyed a champagne and canape reception before the models strutted their stuff.

Clothes on display included fun daytime outfits, such as skinny jeans, casual jackets and straw hats, and more formal looks for events such as Royal Ascot, Henley regatta and summer weddings. The models, made up mostly of local students, impressed members of the audience, including Tricia Henderson, from Wokingham.

She said: "It was a fabulous night. The show was so professional and really brought the clothes and shops to life. "I had written the town off as a place to go shopping and tended to pop in for last minute bits and pieces. "I'm now ready to shop in Wokingham. It was a very glam and fun event for a Thursday night in town. I can't wait for the next one."

The glitzy show kick-started Wokingham Fashion Week, which runs until Sunday. There is a special discount card for participating retailers, including Antique Rose, Rococco, Barbara Easton, M&Co, Fat Face, Dolls House Boutique, Kaanaanmaa and Mishyboo.

The show was the first major event organised by the Town Team, which is using 10,000 from the Mary Portas Grant to promote and improve the town. The show itself was self-funding, with punters buying tickets for 10. A further 220 was raised through a raffle, which will be used for future Town Team projects.
