FOUR bright teenagers are celebrating getting into the country's top two universities.

Eli Lower, left, has been offered as place at Cambridge University and Louisa Britton, Laura Jenkinson and David Goswell, all places at Oxford.

The quartet, pupils at Edgbarrow School, in Crowthorne, were overjoyed this week when they found out they had secured conditional places at Oxford and Cambridge.

Tony Evans, head of sixth form, said he is delighted with the 'superb' achievement and added: "It's amazing and I'm so proud of the four students, but also of the whole year group."

He explained that Year 13 students have been working incredibly hard throughout the year and overall the group has received offers from 20 of the 24 Russell Group universities - which are committed to the highest levels of academia.

"It's huge. The best thing about it is that it goes across the entirety of the sixth form,\" said Mr Evans, explaining the number of applications by Edgbarrow pupils for university places was up 50%, compared to last year, while nationally, figures were down.

"This shows a team effort from students supporting each other and from subject teachers. They've had a fantastic and phenomenal year."

David Goswell, 18, is one of the lucky four and is hoping to gain an A* and two As so he can study medicine at Oxford come September.

He told the News that he has wanted to attend the prestigious institution for years and said: "I'm over the moon with the offer, it's actually surreal and weird to think I might actually end up going there.

"I've done a lot of work experience and find all types [of medicine] really interesting. I'm looking forward to finding out what I want to do most."

And if 17-year-old English buff Eli Lower manages to clinch an A* and two As in her A-levels this summer she will have scooped a place at Cambridge.

She said: "I completely couldn't even believe it when I got the letter because the interview day was just so full on. I'm so shocked I got in!

"Knowing that I can relax a bit now and don't have to worry is such a relief."

Louisa Britton and Laura Jenkinson, both 18, have also been offered conditional places at Oxford, studying chemistry and history respectively, while 113 other students will attend renowned universities such as Bath, Birmingham, Exeter and Imperial College, London.
