TWO of Bracknell's secondary schools aren't making the grade in a key benchmark judging attainment.

Recently revealed league tables for Bracknell Forest secondary schools shows the borough's results overall are above average, with Easthampstead Park Community School (EHPC) and Brakenhale just falling below average in the number of pupils achieving five A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and Maths.

EHPC came below the borough's other secondary schools with 39 per cent of pupils achieving the key benchmark while Brakenhale saw 45 per cent of students achieve the necessary grades.

The figure is a key indicator of a school's performance, with the average pass rate for all secondary schools under local authority control in Bracknell at 58.2 per cent.

Cllr Gareth Barnard, executive member for children, young people and learning, said: "The results for Bracknell Forest in the key benchmark of 5 A* to C grades at GCSE (including English and maths) are above the national average.

"There were positive outcomes for all our schools in last year's results, including at Easthampstead Park, where pupil progress in English far exceeded the national average and 52 per cent of pupils achieve an A*to C grade in English and maths. At Brakenhale, progress in English was in line with the national average.

"However, the council is continuing to work closely with school leadership teams at Brakenhale and Easthampstead Park to further raise the attainment of pupils in this year's exams. We have every confidence that the leadership teams, supported by governors, are working hard to address issues that will lead to improvements in pupils' achievements this summer."

Nationally, an average of 53.8 per cent of pupils achieve at least the five pass grades.

Sandhurst secondary saw 59 per cent of pupils meet the benchmark, Garth Hill College came in at 55 per cent and Edgbarrow topped the list with 69 per cent of pupils getting the five A* to C grades.

Ranelagh School, now an academy so out of the control of Bracknell Forest Council, saw an impressive 86 per cent of pupils meet the attainment benchmark.
