A film company has applied for permission to shoot scenes for what could be a World War Two drama series at a beauty spot near Bracknell.

Recently, an application was submitted for access to Swinley Forest to be used as a film location.

The site the company wants to film at is called Whitmore Bog, and is currently used during certain periods of the year as parking for Lapland UK.

The car park has 455 spaces and is accessed from Buttersteep Rise in Ascot.

Application details reveal the film company wants to use the car park as a ‘unit base’ for filming which involves establishing a marquee for covid testing, a towable welfare cabin and two towable toilet blocks for cast and crew.

Additionally, cast and crew would be using 190 standard car parking spaces.

Filming would be conducted in a tight window, as a design access statement for the plan states that the company is hoping to used the land for three months between March 18 and Sunday, June 18.

The plan falls outside the operating times for its use by Lapland UK, which occupies the site from September 23 to February 8, and is open to the public from November 1 to January 15 each year.

The application has been submitted by Planit Consulting on behalf of GSR UK Productions.

Planit Consulting is itself connected to the company Planit Films that boasts it has found locations for films such as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Avengers, 007: Skyfall, and 1917.

The last two films mentioned were directed by Sam Mendes, who was born in Reading and married to fellow Reading-born star Kate Winslett from 2003 to 2011.

Planit Films also boasts that it has high-profile clients in the film industry such as Netflix, Disney, Warner Brothers, Apple TV+, Paramount, ITV and the British Film Commission.

It has been speculated that the company wants to film in Swinley Forest for a World War Two trilogy drama which legendary film producer Steven Spielberg has been linked to.

That’s because Planit Consulting applied for temporary permission to film for a temporary period of 12 months back in 2021.

At the time, the agent for Planit Consulting said the land would be used to film a World War Two drama.

Although Steven Spielberg or the name of the project was not mentioned, he is executive producing a miniseries called Masters of the Air, based on the book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought The Air War Against Nazi Germany.

Back then, Bracknell Forest Council’s planning department recommended that film permission should be rejected, but this recommendation was overturned by the council’s planning committee on July 1, 2021.

It is thought that delays meant that this permission was never acted upon.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has attempted to contacted Planit Films for clarity.

It is understood that this filming bid is separate from the filming that has taken place in Swinley Forest in February, where it is thought that shooting is underway for the second series of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.
