THE son of a former swimming club chairman is running 400kms around the world to raise money for a dementia charity.

Richard Earls, whose father Jim was the chairman of Bracknell Swimming Club and was instrumental in the setting up of the 1st Emmbrook Scout Group, is aiming to raise as much money as he can for Alzheimer's Research UK after his dad was diagnosed with the condition.

Richard is taking part in the Run Down Dementia campaign, having run more than 340km and raised more than £1,100 so far.

He said: "In 1964 Dad was involved in setting up the 1st Emmbrook Scout Group and became the 1st Cub Scout Leader, "Akela", soon running two Cub packs.

"Demand for places was high but as usual there was a shortage of leaders. Later he became Assistant District Commissioner for the Cubs, eventually taking on the position of District Commissioner for Wokingham. He still attends many functions throughout the year.

"He was also heavily involved with Bracknell Swimming Club, as Chairman, while they were involved with negotiating terms for moving from Broad Lane to the new pool at Bracknell Sports Centre.

"Dad is now 85 years old and is in good health apart from suffering from Alzheimer's. He regularly attends Alzheimer's Research UK's "Singing for the Brain" and he goes to three day centres in the area."

Richard has spent the summer running in locations near and far, including to his old school, Forest School in Winnersh, and around the streets of Amsterdam, France, Mexico, San Francisco and New York City.

He said: "My target is £1,250 and 400kms, which I have to achieve before August 31. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me and kept me going so far."
