Residents are being urged to book both jabs as contracting flu and Covid at the same time risks ‘serious illness’, research by the NHS shows.

Bracknell Forest Council, alongside the NHS, is strongly urging those eligible to come forward as soon as they are invited as vaccines “remain the best protection” against serious illness and hospitalisation from the viruses this winter.

Executive member for adult services, health and housing, Cllr Dale Birch, gets a flu jab “every year” and is encouraging Bracknell residents to do the same.

“This winter, both flu and COVID-19 will be circulating, and it is important to get your vaccinations as soon as you are able to,” he explained.

The latest data shows that, between October 4 and October 10, 103 people went into Frimley Health with coronavirus – a decrease of 18.9 per cent compared to the previous seven days.

There were 126 patients in hospital in the borough with coronavirus on October 12, including three patients in beds with a mechanical ventilator.

Between October 2 and October 8, there has been one death within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test – the same number as in the previous seven days.

The flu vaccine is available to everyone over 50, with those most at risk and over 65 being invited first. This includes those who live with someone at risk from infections, carers, those in long-stay residential care, pregnant women and frontline health care workers.

Children, up to year 11 of secondary school, will be offered the nasal spray version of the flu vaccine at school.

People eligible for a Covid autumn booster include those aged 50 and over, people aged five and over who have underlying health conditions or who live with someone at risk from infections, carers, those in long-stay residential care, pregnant women and frontline health care workers.

Those who are eligible will receive a reminder to book an autumn booster and a flu jab.

“Please don’t delay. Book your appointment to get your winter vaccinations as soon as you are invited. Boost your immunity and help protect yourself and your loved ones,” Cllr Birch said.
