The Liberal Democrats would unseat John Redwood in Wokingham if a general election was held soon, according to a recent poll.

As the parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats, councillor for Hawkedon and leader of Wokingham Borough Coouncil, Clive Jones, would be in line to represent the borough in parliament.

Mr Jones said residents are “fed up” and they have a choice between a “hard-working” Liberal Democrat team and an “out of touch and grossly incompetent” Conservative government.

The MRP poll – a statistical technique used to predict election results by constituency – conducted by Opinium suggests that the 7,400 Conservative majority achieved during the 2019 general election could be overturned.

It predicts that the Liberal Democrats will take the seat, with 49.12 per cent of the vote, with the Tories in second with 27.78 per cent and Labour in third with 15.87 per cent.

The Conservatives have lost three by-elections to the Liberal Democrats since the last election, in Chesham & Amersham, North Shropshire, and Tiverton and Honiton, and they have taken control of Wokingham Borough Council for the first time in 20 years.

Mr Jones said residents are “fed up with long ambulance waiting times, a lack of GP appointments and sewage being pumped into local rivers”.

“For too long this Conservative Government has taken our area for granted. […] People here know that only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservative party in Wokingham and offer a fairer deal to all our residents,” he added.

John Redwood was approached for comment.
