A beloved dog was left fighting for his life after a hit and run accident left him with broken ribs, a destroyed leg and possible brain damage.

On April 6 2022, Cosmo and owner Sophie Bowers were out on their morning walk on Nightingale Crescent when the dog was knocked down by a car which proceeded to drive off.

Due to previous ill health throughout her life, Sophie made the hard decision to forgo pet insurance and was therefore facing thousands of pounds in vet bills or risk losing him altogether.

An appeal was launched one week ago to help Sophie cover the bills for x-rays, scans, vetenary stays and the price of the operation to amputate his leg.

The organiser of the Go-fund me, Kassandra Alicia Hopkins chose to offer her help after hearing about her financial difficulties.

She explained: “I went to secondary school with Sophie and after seeing her so upset and how much she loves her animals I knew I had to help.”

“Sophie made a decision to not have pet insurance for a short while to cut down on essentials but there was no way she could have foreseen what would happen.”

The well-being of the driver in question is also a priority for the pair who have said they are worried over the mental state that they may be feeling after hitting an animal.

Kassandra explained: “To cause harm to an animal is shocking so we completely understand the shock that they could have been in to just drive on.

“We don’t have any malice and the best thing that could happen is for Cosmo to recover and to make sure the driver who hit him is OK.”

Kassandra said that residents and organisations throughout Bracknell, Crowthorne and Sandhurst have reached out, donating in total £820. Over the past week, an additional £100 was also donated to the vets to cover Cosmo’s costs.

She added: “Our minds are blown by the amount of support we have had from the local community. We appreciate all the donations and all the kind words that we have received.”

Currently, Cosmo is home and on his way to recovery following his surgery to amputate his leg. There was doubt whether he would ever make it home again due to the injuries that occurred.
