Birmingham’s plans for the 2022 Commonwealth Games have taken a step forward with the submission of a formal planning application for the athletes’ village.
The development at the former Birmingham City University campus in Perry Barr would host up to 6,500 competitors and games officials.
In the longer term, it would provide 1,400 new homes across the social and affordable rent, private rent and for sale markets.
Local residents will now have an opportunity to view the regeneration plans and provide feedback on them.
Prime Minster Theresa May announced a £70million refurbishment of the city’s Alexander Stadium, which will see its capacity boosted to 40,000 for the games and retain 20,000 seats thereafter, as the focal point for the event in April.
The revamped stadium will also include community sports facilities within a new stand, a permanent warm-up track and a new conference meeting space.
