BetVictor League: Chesham United FC knocked off top spot as Beaconsfield Town FC fail to convert chances in defeat

The Generals held top spot only for a short while in a competitive race for the title and it is the first time they have gone back-to-back matches in the league without a win since October.

The hosts broke the deadlock as Mark Kirby flicked the ball on with a header and Steve Brown powered in the opener.

Taunton are chasing a spot in the play-offs and equalised as Chesham could not clear the ball and Matt Wright fired in before half-time.

The Generals were gifted the chance to restore the advantage in the second half when a penalty kick was awarded for a handball offence and Shane White was shown a red card. The resulting spot-kick however hit the base of the post with the keeper beaten.

Chesham came close to getting their noses in front again inside the final 10 minutes as Dan Sully cleared the ball off his own goal line.

The result means Chesham have dropped to second position in the table and a point behind new leaders Truro City who have played a game less than The Generals. Chesham now face a mouth-watering game at third-placed Tiverton Town on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

Beaconsfield Town suffered consecutive defeats in the league for the first time in seven weeks following their 2-0 loss at Farnborough.

The Rams were unfortunate not to break the deadlock at Cherrywood Road as a ferocious shot from Charlie Losasso thundered back off the post to safety with the keeper beaten.

Farnborough were presented with the chance to open the scoring in the second half with the dubious award of a penalty kick when it appeared to be more of a dive inside the box from Louis Dunne. The resulting spot-kick was dispatched to the back of the net by Andrew Sealy-Harris.

A second penalty was awarded inside the final five minutes when Beaconsfield keeper Myles Bowman brought down a forward just inside the box and again Sealy-Harris converted to secure all three points.

The defeat means Beaconsfield remain second from bottom in the league table but now nine points from safety although The Rams do have four games in hand on Walton Casuals who are above them in the promotion/play-off spot.

Beaconsfield now turn their attention to the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup and a trip to Newport Pagnell Town in the second round on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Marlow climbed up three places to 12th position in the BetVictor South Central Division after a 2-1 win at Bedfont Sports.

Two goals from Jordan Brown – the second from the penalty spot – gave The Blues are clear lead heading into the break at the Bedfont Recreation Ground before Darryl Sanders pulled one back for the home side in the second half.

Chalfont St Peter are now six games without a win in the league following their 2-1 defeat against title-chasing Hanwell Town.

A goal from Dan Williams gave The Saints the lead at Mill Meadow but the hosts were reduced to 10-men as Kayode Conteh was shown a second yellow card and Ogochukwu Obi equalised for Hanwell from the penalty spot before the break.

Hanwell wrapped up the win when Rob Laney scored the winning goal 10 minutes into the second half.

The Saints have not taste success since the win at Northwood on Boxing Day and have fallen to 14th position in the table ahead of a trip to Bracknell Town this Saturday (3pm).
