ROGER Herridge described Binfield's 4-0 win over AFC Uckfield in the FA Vase as one of the best performances of his managerial career, writes Dave Wright.

The Moles blasted their way into the fourth round, the last 32, where they will visit Southern Counties League club and 2000 Vase winners, Deal Town on January 11.

"We were by far the best side and the scoreline did not flatter us," said the manager following Saturday's victory at Hill Farm Lane.

"They gave us a proper test. They were not pretty and I don't think there have been too many times in the last five or six years we have seen a side come here and play the way they did.

"But we were strong and well disciplined and didn't let them unsettle us.

"I would say it was the complete performance, up among our best under my management."

Herridge continued: "We have some good footballers in the side, and we know we can play some good football and we showed those qualities.

"It is probably wrong to single out players, but I thought Jamie McClurg was unbelievable. He was on another level, absolutely sensational. He is a leader on and off the pitch.

"Carl Withers (assistant manager) and Jamie are very influential in what we do here, but it is very much a squad effort. We had to make some tough decisions over team selection and who to leave out."

They bought in centre-back Guy Hollis, signed on dual registration forms with Slough, while the experienced Chris Grace took over in goal from teenager Joe Williams.

Explaining Hollis's signing, Herridge said: "He became available and it was a decision we had to make. He is a Conference South centre-half and that is where he wants to be playing his football.

"It was a hard decision as we had to leave out some good centre-halves, but if a player of his quality becomes available, then we felt we are justified in playing him. He was excellent alongside Calam (Gallimore)."

The Moles manager continued: "We also had a very strong bench and we were able to bring on Jemel (Johnson) and Tom (Melledew) who both won the FA Vase with Thatcham at Wembley

"That also shows the strength of the squad and we are going to need them all as there is lots more football to be played over the next few months."

Due to their Vase run, Binfield are getting behind with their Hellenic League fixtures and this Saturday's home match against Bishops Cleeve will be only their 12th in the Premier Division.
