WHILE disappointed to lose Carl Davies back to Bracknell, Binfield have boosted their squad by signing his former Town teammate George Short, writes Dave Wright.

The midfielder, who more recently has been playing for Winchester City, is getting over an injury and that has delayed his debut.

Moles manager Roger Herridge said: “He trained last Thursday and felt he is not quite ready to play, but he is not far away.

“He will be a really good signing for us.”

In addition to Davies, another ex-Robins player Jonny Hathaway and former Reading City defender Matt Deadfield have also left.

“It was hard for them as we have other good players in their positions,” explained Herridge.

“They are young and need to be playing regularly.”

He continued: “We have a really good group at the club. There is a good togetherness, but we also need competition for places.

“We will only sign players who we feel will fit into the group and who are better players than what we have here.”

The Moles certainly got it all together last Monday when they crushed Chalvey Sports 6-1 in the Hellenic League’s Bluefin Sports Cup on a very wet evening at Hill Farm Lane.

With David Lyons back in goal for the first time since August 10, they fell behind to a Bryan Taylor goal in the 11th minute.

But eight minutes later, Sean Moore opened Binfield’s account and an equally fine finish from Asa Povey put them ahead after 25 minutes.

Jewel Johnson made it 3-1 on 64 minutes with Josh Howell getting his name on the scoresheet three minutes later.

It was now raining goals as skipper Moore scored again in the 70th minute and Danny Horscroft quickly followed up to make it six.

Herridge commented: “I thought we were average in the first half, but you have to give Chalvey some credit as they worked really hard. But there was no way they could maintain their work rate for 90 minutes and there was only one team in it in the second half. We could easily have had a few more goals.”

Binfield, who were voted the Hellenic League’s team of the month for August, travel to Gloucestershire next Saturday to play Tuffley Rovers (3pm).
