ENGLISHMAN Matt Wallace produced a sparkling opening round of 65 to take a one-shot lead into the second day of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Wallace carded five birdies and an eagle during a flawless round on a sun-kissed day to lead by one shot from Henrik Stenson, who sunk a fabulous putt for eagle on the 18th.

Spain's Jon Rahm was also in top form as he shot a 66, while his fellow Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose - who overcame an injury scare which forced him out of the Pro-Am on Wednesday - was five-under-par.

A double bogey on the last left Paul Casey resting on -4, alongside former major winners Ernie Els and Danny Willett.

It was a bad day for Rory McIlroy, however, who having shot -3 through his first three holes, ended up +4 after shooting 42 on the back nine.
