Reading boss Jose Gomes explained his side followed their plan perfectly as they comfortably beat promotion hopefuls Cardiff City 3-0 at the Madejski Stadium.

A superb double from George Puscas and a wonderful John Swift handed Reading their first league victory of the season against a Cardiff side tipped by many to go straight back to the Premier League.

A delighted Gomes praised his players for their work and insisted his team executed everything expertly.

He said: "The players really followed a plan.

"My players really respected everything that they should do. They did it and we got the result for our organisation, teamwork, good defensive organisation and very good combinations in attack.

"We created situations that we could score and we could have got more at the end of the game.

"I am pleased with the culture of these players."

Puscas grabbed two goals on his full league debut for the Royals and Gomes admitted that the brace would do his confidence no harm at all.

He added: "It is always good for strikers.

"It gives them confidence each time they score. We cannot forget that if they receive so many good balls it shows good organisation at the back and it shows the other players played well enough to give them these balls."

With Reading's slow start, Gomes insisted he was never concerned with the amount of time still left in the season to turn things around and move up the table.

He said: "It is always a good time for a win.

"We are at the beginning of the season and a lot will always happen. There are ups and downs and what we want is to keep the togetherness we have in the changing room because we have very good people.

"The quality that they have and if we keep this spirit until the end of the season, we will be closer to the top of the table."
