Reading boss Jose Gomes called on his troops to show the right spirit as they face League One side Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow night in the Carabao Cup.

The Royals are sure to face a stern test from the Chairboys and he knows that the players need to respect the challenge ahead if they are going to be in the hat for Round Two.

The Portuguese said: “The schedule is fantastic – the number of games we have, and that pushes the players to give their maximum, and get the points that we need to reach the target we want.

“By not giving the maximum, you have inside you from the whistle, you are not respecting the football. If you don’t make this, and when you’re not respecting the football, that’s where the surprises can happen.

“We will respect the football; the players will give their maximum and hopefully we will get the result we want against Wycombe.

“It may be a chance to see some players who have arrived. I want to progress, and if we change some players it does not mean that we are not strong – it depends how they perform and if they show the right spirit.

“It doesn’t matter the name of the players that you pick; if they have the spirit that we had in the first half against Hull, you cannot win. If you pick different players and they use the spirit that we had in the second half, then for sure we will win.”
