Reading FC midfielder Charlie Adam insisted the club will bring in new players before Thursday’s transfer deadline, writes Courtney Friday.

Adam, a new signing himself, spoke out in the wake of Reading’s 3-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Royals found themselves in a financial crisis this summer after significantly overspending on player wages in recent years.

The club was slapped with a league-imposed transfer embargo while long-term servants Garath McCleary and Chris Gunter were axed from Gomes’ plans in a desperate bid to reduce the wage bill.

No fewer than 15 players left the club in the summer, with five new faces coming in once the embargo was lifted.

Chief Executive Nigel Howe recently stated the club is still in the market for a striker, and 33-year-old Adam said: “There will be players coming in in the next week or so.

“We will invite them into the group and welcome them. Hopefully they can get into the team and we can start winning games."

“It’s not up to me, it’s up to the manager and the owner to make that decision,” he replied when quizzed whether Royals need a striker.

“Naturally we’ll try and bring in extra players because we’re a bit younger than most but we’ll have to see what happens.”

Royals have been linked with a move for Sheffield Wednesday striker Lucas Joao, who scored Owls’ third in the 3-1 win at Madejski Stadium.

Adam said: "I don’t know anything about him. We’re re-building and they’re trying to get players in. Joao is a player that came on and caused us problems but we have to worry about we do and not worry about what everyone else is going."
