EAST Berkshire hosted a successful captain’s weekend with a field of 137 competing for the men’s and ladies Captain’s Cups on Saturday, followed by 27 fourball teams on Sunday.

Callum Russell (10hcp) returned 40 points to win the men’s Captains’ Cup by three points from Simon Plummer (22hcp). Third place with 36 points went to David Forsythe (5hcp) with his round including an eagle at the 367-yard seventh hole.

The ladies' Captains Cup was won on countback by last year’s winner Lisa Smith (22hcp) with 36 points. Runner-up was ladies captain Donna Hunt (9hcp) with Amanda Leach (8hcp) third with 35 points.

Russell was also in the team which won the four-ball event along with Alfie Russell, Charlie Edmundson and Josh Edmundson. With the best two out of four scores counting, they returned 96 points.

Andrew Cousins, Mike Foster, Marcus Swanston and Kate Hood took second place on countback from Neil Jopling, Richard LeRoy, Ella Hammond-Baverstock and Damien Hammond with 85 points.

Club captain Peter Stevens commented: “Members came together for a celebration of golf over two days and enjoyed a great social occasion. It was fantastic seeing so many people enjoying themselves.”

Neil Jopling (5hcp) shot a two-under-par 67 to win the club's midweek stableford with 43 points following a round which included three birdies and a hole in one at the 164-yard third.

The runner-up with 37 points on countback was Tim Brown (12hcp) with Alex Platt (12hcp) taking third place.

A nine-hole midweek stableford competition was also played with Alfie Russell (24hcp) returning 20 points to win by one point from Alec Pearce (18hcp).
