LONDON Irish have confirmed the signing of British and Irish Lions and four-time Heineken Cup-winning star Sean O'Brien.

The 31-year-old 'Tullow Tank' is regarded as one of the best players in Europe across the back row, and featured in the successful Lions series in Australia in 2013 and the drawn effort in New Zealand in 2017.

He picked up his 54th Ireland cap during their 22-13 victory in Scotland on Saturday, and has also won four Heineken Cups with club side Leinster.

In addition, he has been part of two Pro 14-winning sides while playing more than 100 games for the province.

O'Brien was given his international debut by Exiles director of rugby Declan Kidney, and he is looking forward to linking up with the former Ireland coach again when he arrives in December, following the World Cup.

O'Brien said: “After speaking with Declan it was obvious the ambition London Irish have as a club.

“I’m keen to roll up the sleeves and use my experience to help re-establish London Irish as a top club in England."

He added: “It’s a club that’s been around for a long time and there’s an obvious connection to Ireland with some greats of Irish rugby having previously worn the jersey.

"For now my concentration remains solely with Leinster and Ireland, but it’s an exciting challenge that awaits.”

Kidney was also delighted to capture O'Brien, stating: “Recruitment is an on-going process, and we are always on the lookout for players of Sean’s ability.

“He has proven himself time and time again to be a quality player who sets very high standards for himself and those around him, he leads by example and has a winning mentality.

“We are delighted Sean wants to come and be a part of our journey as we head back into Brentford in 2020/21 after he has finished his commitments to Leinster and Ireland at the end of this year.”
