A disappointed Roger Herridge trooped slowly off the pitch following Binfield's 1-1 draw with Virginia Water on Monday to say: "Well, that sums up how things are going for us at the moment"

His side, looking to end a run of three successive defeats, were leading through a Jemel Johnson goal as the game went into five minutes of stoppage time.

But shortly after trying to keep possession near their opponents' corner flag, the Moles rushed a throw-in and then needlessly gave away a free-kick.

They were made to pay, as Water skipper Steve Williams floated a high cross into a crowded goal area, where the ball hit Binfield skipper James Knight, who was under pressure from Adam Mills, on its way past keeper Chris Grace to give the visitors a 93rd-minute equaliser.

"We shot ourselves in the foot and we've been doing that quite a few times in recent weeks," bemoaned manager Herridge

"They (Virginia Water) should not have been in the game. We had enough chances to have won three games, while they hardly created one in 90 minutes."

The best scoring opportunities fell to Ian Davies, but the club's leading scorer had an off night, even sending a 41st-minute penalty over the bar.

However, their next attack did have a happy ending, with Johnson cutting in from the right and drilling a well-placed shot into the net.

Moments later, Johnson was back helping his defence, clearing the ball away to deny the visitors a quick equaliser.

Shortly after half-time, Grace had to tip over a rasping drive from Josh Hill, but Binfield generally had the better of the second half and appeared capable of hanging on to their slender lead.

"I thought our game management was good for 90 minutes until they scored," commented Herridge.

"My players worked hard and I am not going to knock them, but some are lacking in confidence.

"Tonight you saw our problem, we are not clinical enough in the final third and we cannot keep a clean sheet."

An unfortunate run of injuries also shows no sign of ending with their latest casualties being defenders Jeff Brown and new signing Damian Smith, who broke his toe in the 4-0 defeat at Abingdon United last week, while midfielder Carl Withers was also hurt in the same game.

Then on Saturday, Binfield's patched-up side went down 6-3 at fifth-placed Bishops Cleeve, their goals coming from Stephen Peacock, Davies and Josh Howell.

"We have now failed to win any of our last six games and it's important that we get ourselves out of this rut as soon as possible," said Herridge. "I am trying to bring in a couple of players to help our cause."

The Moles, now down to 12th in the table but having played fewer games than all the sides above them, are home to eighth-placed Lydney this Saturday.
