NORREYS pulled off one of the shocks of the Thames Valley Church League season with a last-gasp 2-1 victory at home to title-chasing Barkham Athletic.

Many would have expected the former leaders to have no problem in dispatching Norreys, but it was the home side who started brightly and almost took an early lead when Charlie Sawyer struck the bar from all of 40 yards.

However, Barkham regrouped and took the lead with 15 minutes remaining with a well-worked free kick which Matt Armstrong flicked home.

Norreys did not give up, though, and netted an injury-time equaliser through Jack Goodwin who headed home unmarked from a free kick.

And Barkham were then left shell-shocked as Sawyer played James Smith in from a tight angle, and the midfielder lashed home the winner with the last kick of the game to spark jubilant scenes among the Norreys players.

YMCA Newbury took full advantage of Barkham's defeat as they comfortably beat YMCA United 3-0 in the local derby. Goals from Matt Bullock, Karim Gaye and Reece Yard proved to be enough for the home side as they went a point clear at the top.

Bethel United kept the pressure on the title-chasing pack with a convincing 5-1 win over Wycliffe Wanderers, goals from Sherif Salah, Morgan Jefferies and Carl Allen, and a brace from Sid Abu doing the damage.

Greyfriars moved up to third in the table with a 1-0 win over Reading Saints.

The weather postponed Beacon's clash against West Reading and Brookside's game with Wycliffe United.

BARTON Rovers ladies exited the Southern Region Women's League Cup following a 3-2 defeat at New Milton.

The hosts took an early lead then doubled the score just before the break, but Rovers worked their way back into the game and started to create chances.

They cut the deficit in first-half injury-time when Cheryl Williams scored with a brilliant effort from outside the box, and Rovers levelled 10 minutes into the second period when Phoebe Cole blasted home.

However, Milton went back in front against the run of play, and despite Barton's best efforts, they were unable to find and equaliser.

Jo Walsh-Perks was the star performer for Newbury in their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier Division.
