BINFIELD defeated Royal Wootton Bassett 3-2 in the Hellenic League Premier Division on Saturday with goals from Jemel Johnson, Gary Smith and skipper James Knight.

“It was a win we needed,” admitted manager Roger Herridge, having seen his side take only one point from their previous two games.

“We made things difficult for ourselves at times on what was a horrid day to play football. We deserved to get the three points.”

The Moles went ahead after 34 minutes when Johnson used his pace to get in behind the Bassett defence and beat keeper Charlie McCready from the edge of the area, but they lost the lead just before half-time with Matt Bennett netted the equaliser.

Smith restored the home side’s lead in the 68th minute and four minutes later skipper Knight, pictured left, made it 3-1.

Former Bracknell striker TJ Bohane pulled a late goal back for Bassett, who have not won away from home since defeating Ascot United last December.

Despite having played fewer Premier Division fixtures than anyone else apart from Wantage, Binfield find themselves without a game for the next two weeks.

“It seems a bit odd considering we are already six games behind some teams,” commented Herridge.

Unless they get a late re-arranged fixture, Moles will not be back in action until Friday, November 23, when they face Flackwell Heath at Hill Farm Lane.
