PIGGOTT boys won the Years 9 and 10 title in the Reading and District Schools Cross-Country League after a sensational performance in the fourth and final round.

The Wargrave pupils took full advantage of running on their school's fields by filling the first four places, with Sam Pepall leading home the 41-strong field.

The 10 points left them with a final total of 63 from the four rounds, well ahead of runner-up Park House on 186 with the Piggott B team third on 244.

Piggott also did well in the Girls' Years 7 and 8 competition, with the A team comfortably winning the whole competition and their B team third, the pair being split by Highdown.

The Girls' Years 9 and 10 title went to the Holt after Abigail Baines had again led the Wokingham school home in the final round.

Piggott claimed the silver medal position, as they did in the Boys' Years 7 and 8 event, although some way behind winners Park House (Newbury).

The next big event for the young cross-country runners are the Berkshire Schools championships, which take place at the Newbury Showground on January 19.

It is open to individuals and teams.
